Jeimer Candelario had five hits, including a two-run single, Nicholas Castellanos singled home the go-ahead run in the 11th inning and the visiting Detroit Tigers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 on Sunday afternoon to gain a split in the four-game series.

Grayson Greiner singled with one out in the top of the 11th against Thomas Pannone (0-1). Candelario singled with two out to put runners at the corners and Castellanos delivered his RBI single.

The Blue Jays had squandered a chance in the bottom of the 10th. Richard Urena, who had three hits, doubled against Daniel Stumpf (1-0), but was out at home as he tried to score when shortstop Jordy Mercer knocked down a grounder in the hole by pinch hitter Freddy Galvis.

The Blue Jays had tied the game on a pinch-hit three-run homer by Rowdy Tellez in the eighth.

Shane Greene pitched around a single and a hit batter to earn his second save of the season.

Tigers starter Matt Moore allowed two hits and one walk while striking out six over seven innings.

Toronto starter Trent Thornton allowed two hits over five innings and struck out eight, a Blue Jays franchise record for a pitcher making his major league debut.

Toronto starters have not allowed a run over 24 innings in their first four games of the season.

Urena had the Blue Jays' first hit with one out in the sixth, a single on a grounder up the middle. Danny Jansen sent Urena to third with a two-out single, but Moore struck out Brandon Drury.

Niko Goodrum, who had three hits, led off the seventh with a double to left against Tim Mayza and took third on Christin Stewart's groundout to first.

John Hicks walked. Javy Guerra replaced Mayza and struck out Mikie Mahtook. Guerra hit Greiner with a pitch to load the bases and walked Mercer to force in a run. Candelario followed with a two-run single.

Elvis Luciano, a 19-year-old, replaced Guerra to make his major league debut and get the final out. He survived a double and an intentional walk in the eighth.

Kevin Pillar singled with one out in the eighth against Joe Jimenez and Urena followed with a ground-rule double. Tellez, batting for Luke Maile, hit a three-run homer to tie the game.
