Indians 5, Athletics 1: Jeanmar Gomez and five Cleveland relievers combined to hold host Oakland to one run and the Indians improved to 7-1 on their nine-game road trip.
After a 25-pitch first inning, Gomez (1-0) settled down and retired 11 in a row at one point, giving up one run on five hits over 5 1/3 innings. Chris Perez retired Kila Ka'aihue with two men on in the ninth for his sixth save.
Leading 2-1 in the top of the eighth, Cleveland pulled away with a two-out, three-run rally. Jason Kipnis delivered the key hit, a two-run triple off Brian Fuentes.
Kipnis went 4-for-5, raising his batting average from .167 to .226.
Oakland starter Brandon McCarthy (0-3) remained winless despite pitching seven strong innings, giving up two runs on 10 hits on 113 pitches.
The Indians have won six of their last seven against the Athletics, who were outhit 14-8. Oakland scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth on Yoenis Cespedes’ sacrifice fly.
