Manny Machado and Juan Soto each hit his 20th home run of the season and Blake Snell allowed just one run across six innings as the host San Diego Padres beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-1 on Tuesday night.

Gary Sanchez also went deep for the Padres, who snapped a two-game skid.

Snell (7-8) surrendered two hits while walking five and striking out four. He lowered his ERA to 2.61, the lowest among major league starters. Steven Wilson, Robert Suarez and Josh Hader each followed with a scoreless inning of relief.

After Soto homered off Angel Perdomo in the seventh to give the Padres a two-run lead, Perdomo drilled Machado in the back with a 98 mph fastball. The four umpires met and ejected Perdomo for intentionally hitting Machado. Pirates manager Derek Shelton was also ejected.

Pittsburgh took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Carlos Santana drew a leadoff walk and scored on a double by Henry Davis.

Machado led off the bottom of the inning with a 418-foot drive to left-center off Pirates starter Rich Hill (7-10). Xander Bogaerts followed with a single, stole second and scored on Sanchez's single to give the Padres a 2-1 lead.

Neither team scored again until Soto's seventh-inning blast made it 3-1.

San Diego extended its lead in the bottom of the eighth. Luis Campusano opened the inning with a double off Dauri Moreta, who entered the game after the Perdomo ejection. Sanchez followed with his 10th homer of the season.

Snell retired 10 straight Pirates after Davis' second-inning double before running into trouble in the fifth.

With one out, Snell issued back-to-back walks to Nick Gonzales and Liover Peguero ahead of a bases-loading infield single from No. 9 hitter Austin Hedges. But Snell struck out Connor Joe and Bryan Reynolds to end the threat.

Pittsburgh finished with just three hits. Hill allowed two runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Before Tuesday's game, the Pirates placed infielder Tucupita Marcano on the 60-day injured list with a right knee ligament injury that he sustained in Monday night's series opener. Pittsburgh called up infielder Alika Williams from Triple-A Indianapolis, and he came off the bench to walk in his first major league plate appearance.
