Erick Fedde struck out a career-high 10 batters, Tres Barrera and Ryan Zimmerman each slugged a two-run homer and the Washington Nationals earned a 5-1 win over the host Miami Marlins on Tuesday night.

Miami lost its eighth game in a row while Washington ended a two-game skid.

Fedde (6-8), who lasted 6 1/3 innings, was dominant for most of the night. He walked one and allowed six hits and one run, improving to 3-0 with a 0.98 ERA in five career starts against the Marlins.

Zimmerman socked his 40th career homer against the Marlins, tying him for second place on that list with Chipper Jones. Only Ryan Howard, with 41, hit more dingers against the Marlins.

Barrera, a 26-year-old rookie catcher, has just two career homers -- but both of them have come this season against the Marlins. He finished Tuesday's game 3-for-4, his first career three-hit game.

Marlins lefty Jesus Luzardo, who entered the night with a 9.68 ERA in four starts since being acquired from the Oakland A's, had another rough game. Luzardo (4-7) allowed 10 hits, one walk and five runs in 4 2/3 innings. He fanned three.

Washington opened the scoring in the fourth inning, slugging three consecutive extra-base hits.

Yadiel Hernandez started the rally by grounding a one-out triple to the corner in right, and Barrera jumped on a 2-2 curve, which was up in the zone, for a two-run homer. Luis Garcia then doubled and scored on Lane Thomas' two-out single, giving the Nationals a 3-0 lead.

Miami threatened in the bottom of the fourth as Jesus Sanchez singled to start a rally. Brian Anderson then golfed a double that short-hopped the wall in right-center. Sanchez raced past third base, looking to score. However, when he got the stop sign, he was tagged trying to get back to third on a throw from shortstop Alcides Escobar to third baseman Carter Kieboom.

Washington extended its lead to 5-0 in the fifth. Juan Soto singled before Zimmerman jumped on a 1-2 changeup, slugging his homer 415 feet to left.

Miami got on the board in the seventh. With one out, Jorge Alfaro singled, and Bryan De La Cruz walked. Fedde was lifted for Andres Machado, who allowed pinch hitter Jesus Aguilar's two-out RBI single. Machado struck out two batters in the inning, including Miguel Rojas to end the frame.
