Alex Wood allowed one run and struck out six over six innings to improve to 5-0, and the visiting San Francisco Giants earned a four-game series split with a 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.
Buster Posey had three hits, Mike Yastrzemski belted a two-run homer and three relievers held Pittsburgh batters without a hit as the Giants bounced back from dropping the previous two games of the set in walk-off fashion. Wood (1.75 ERA) overcame eight hits and a walk and allowed the lone Pirates' run on Ka'ai Tom's sacrifice fly in the fourth to continue his strong start to 2021.
Pittsburgh's Mitch Keller (2-5) yielded two runs on six hits and three walks, striking out eight, over five innings. Adam Frazier and Erik Gonzalez each had two hits for the Pirates, who were trying to match a season high with a third consecutive win.
San Francisco opened the scoring in the first inning when Mike Tauchman led off with a walk and eventually scored on Alex Dickerson's fielder's choice. The Giants, though, failed to take advantage of another leadoff walk from Keller in the fourth, this time to Evan Longoria. He moved to third on Brandon Crawford's double down into the right-field corner with nobody out, but Keller struck out the next three hitters.
Wood was solid until the fourth inning, when he loaded the bases after singles to each of the first three hitters. Tom tied the game at 1-1 with the sacrifice fly, but that was all the damage Pittsburgh could muster in the frame.
The Giants took the lead back in the sixth when Longoria, who opened the inning with a single, scored on a wild pitch from Pirates reliever Clay Holmes. Yastrzemski's fifth homer in the ninth provided some late insurance for San Francisco.
Pittsburgh catcher Jacob Stallings exited in the seventh inning with a reported quad contusion.
