Plenty of extra-base power and a pitcher making his major league debut helped the Chicago White Sox continue their climb towards the .500 mark on Wednesday.
James McCann, Yolmer Sanchez and Ryan Cordell each had two hits and two RBIs to lift the White Sox to a 7-5 win over the visiting Detroit Tigers in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday.
The White Sox banged out 12 hits, five of which were doubles, which was enough support to help right-hander Dylan Cease earn the win in his first major league start.
Cease struck out six, walked four, and allowed four hits and three runs in five innings of work. He bounced back to earn the win despite a laborious first inning that saw him throw 33 pitches.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead by scoring two runs in the first, going up 2-0 on a 2-run single by Harold Castro.
The White Sox answered in the bottom of the first, scoring a run on an RBI double by McCann.
Chicago tied the game in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by Leury Garcia, then took a 3-2 lead in the fourth on an RBI double by Sanchez.
After Sanchez scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Cordell -- giving the White Sox a 4-2 lead through four -- the Tigers cut their deficit to 4-3 in the fifth on a solo home run to right-center by Jeimer Candelario.
The White Sox gained some separation in the sixth when they scored two runs to take a 6-3 lead, on an RBI single by Sanchez and an RBI safety squeeze bunt by Cordell.
Chicago added a run in the seventh on an RBI single by McCann to make it 7-3.
Detroit added two runs with two outs in the ninth on back-to-back RBI doubles by Gordon Beckham and Christin Stewart. But Alex Colome got Nick Castellanos to ground out to third to end the game, notching his 19th save.
Daniel Norris (2-8) lasted five innings in taking loss for the Tigers, allowing six runs and eight hits.
The White Sox have won four out of five games, while the Tigers lost for the 10th time in 11 games.
Tigers center fielder JaCoby Jones left the game in the fifth inning due to back spasms.
