Pinch hitter Andrew Knapp hit a game-winning solo home run with one out in the bottom of the 13th inning, and the Philadelphia Phillies rallied from behind to knock off the Washington Nationals 4-3 on Sunday at Citizens Bank Park.

Knapp hit his third home run of the season on a full-count fastball from Washington's Justin Miller, as the Phillies took three of four from the Nationals to remain in second place in the National League East. Philadelphia is three games ahead of Washington.

The Nationals led 3-0 after a single by Adam Eaton drove home Daniel Murphy and Mark Reynolds in the fifth inning. Washington went scoreless in the final eight innings and has lost five of its last six games.

The Phillies answered back in the bottom half of the fifth, sending eight batters to the plate. Washington starter Gio Gonzalez walked three during the inning, including Cesar Hernandez with the bases loaded to give Philadelphia its first run. Rhys Hoskins followed with a sacrifice fly, driving in Nick Williams, and Odubel Herrera tied the score with an RBI single.

Gonzalez left after the fifth inning. He surrendered three runs on three hits, while striking out four and walking four.

Philadelphia starter Jake Arrieta also lasted five innings. He surrendered three runs (two earned), on four hits. He struck out two and walked two.

Philadelphia had runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Washington reliever Sean Doolittle got Carlos Santana to ground into a double play, sending the game into extra innings tied at 3.

The Phillies placed right-hander Vince Velasquez on the 10-day disabled list Sunday. Velasquez suffered a bruised right forearm after being hit by a line drive during Saturday's game.

The Nationals head to Boston to take on the Red Sox in a three-game series that begins Monday and will conclude with a Fourth of July matinee on Wednesday at Fenway Park.

The Phillies open a two-game home series against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday.
