TORONTO -- Ryan Goins made the baseball disappear twice on Friday night,

The first time the Toronto Blue Jays shortstop did it, he ended the top of third by tagging out New York Yankees third baseman Todd Frazier at second base on the hidden ball trick.

The next time came in the sixth when sent the ball over the right-field fence for his second career grand slam and his second of the season.

Goins' disappearing acts and seven strong innings from starter Marco Estrada helped the Blue Jays defeat the New York Yankees 8-1.

Goins, who said he cannot remember successfully executing the hidden ball trick since "maybe when I was little," was fully aware that his eighth home run of the season was the first hit he ever had against Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka.

"I'd never gotten a hit ball out of the infield off Tanaka much less in the air," Goins said. "I just told myself and to try to get a good pitch and not make another out, and not make it 0-for-23, or 24, something like that, with about 10 ground balls back to the pitcher."

Goins was actually 0-for-22 against Tanaka before his grand slam.

"I figured that was a good matchup for (Tanaka), it just didn't work," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He hung an 0-2 pitch. For whatever reason, he's been inconsistent this year."

Teoscar Hernandez and Russell Martin also homered for the Blue Jays (72-82) in the opener of a three-game series.

Aaron Judge homered for the Yankees (85-68), who are four games behind the first-place Boston Red Sox in the American League East.

Estrada (10-8) held the Yankees to one run on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts over seven innings in his first start since signing a one-year, $13 million contract extension.

"The defense had a lot to do with it, (right fielder Jose) Bautista made some great plays," Estrada said. "I don't know if I've ever seen that play at second where they tagged Frazier out. Obviously, I'll take every single one. Russ (catcher Martin) called a great game."

Tanaka (12-12) allowed eight runs (seven earned), six hits that included three home runs, and three walks in 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out six.

"I just didn't have good command," Tanaka said. "I was able to locate some of my pitches, but the ones I wasn't able to, I felt like I really got hurt by them."

Bautista led off with a walk and Kevin Pillar singled. Tanaka struck out two batters before walking pinch hitter Kendrys Morales to set up Goins' homer. He has 59 RBIs for the season and is batting .714 (10-for-14) with the bases loaded.

"He's had one of those years, he's been clutch," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said.

Tommy Kahnle replaced Tanaka and struck out Hernandez to end the inning.

Toronto's Matt Dermody retired the first two batters in the top of the eighth before Tom Koehler took over to face Judge, who walked before Gary Sanchez ended the inning by grounding out to third.

Carlos Ramirez pitched a perfect ninth for Toronto.

Judge hammered his 46th homer of the season to left in the first inning.

"That was one of the hardest hit balls I've ever given up," Estrada said. "It actually was a good pitch. I tried to go up and in and I got it in there and he turned on it so you tip your hat to that."

The Blue Jays tied the game in the bottom of the first.

Hernandez led off with a single. He went to third when second baseman Starlin Castro missed the catch on a throw from Frazier in the attempted force play at second on Josh Donaldson's grounder to third.

Hernandez scored when Bautista grounded out on a chopper to third.

The Yankees could not take advantage of a leadoff double by Frazier in the third. The inning ended when Goins faked a throw to Estrada and tagged Frazier after he had stepped off the bag. Goins had just taken the throw from Bautista, who had made the catch in deep right on a drive by Jacoby Ellsbury.

"Bonehead play by me, to be honest with you," Frazier said. "I try and do that, too. I thought the ball was thrown in. Just one of those things. Nothing you can do about it afterward, it's just one of those things where you've got to have a little better mindset and understand what's going on in the game."

"That was fun that's all I can say," Goins said. "I guess with the new rules you keep the tag on for a long time sometimes, so I'll just joke around keeping it on there, knowing guys aren't going to come off. That time I just arm faked and was going to sit there and just watch him and something in my head said he was going to take his foot off the base, so I put my glove on him and that was it."

Hernandez hit his third homer of the season with one out in the bottom of the third to give the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead.

The Blue Jays led 4-1 in the fourth after Martin's 13th homer of the season also scored Bautista, who had started the inning with a walk.
