SEATTLE -- Justin Verlander's eagerly anticipated debut was everything the Houston Astros hoped for, but the veteran right-hander was more than willing to share the victory spotlight Tuesday night.

Fellow newcomer Cameron Maybin, claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels last week, launched a two-run homer in the seventh inning to lift Houston past the Seattle Mariners 3-1, the Astros' sixth consecutive victory.

Verlander (11-8), acquired in a trade with Detroit on Thursday, allowed one run on six hits in six innings. The six-time All-Star and 2011 Cy Young Award winner struck out seven and walked one in a 103-pitch outing.

"A lot of nerves, a lot of excitement," Verlander said. "I think the closest thing I can compare it to is Opening Day kind of nerves. The unknown, don't really want to let everybody down, new team -- but these guys have made the process pretty easy on me so far, just fitting in and feeling like I'm right at home as quickly as possible."

The Astros (85-53), who were unable to solve wildly effective starter Ariel Miranda through six hitless innings, broke through against the Mariners bullpen in the seventh.

Brian McCann drew a one-out walk off James Pazos, who came on to open the inning. Emilio Pagan replaced Pazos (4-5), and Maybin ripped a 3-2 pitch to left for his eighth homer to snap a 1-1 tie and end the combined no-hit bid.

"It's one of those things where this team has been playing great team baseball and everybody has something to do with the success," Maybin said. "I'm just trying to fit into the mold, just trying to help out, be a spark defensively and offensively."

Verlander remained in the game after being struck in the wrist by Robinson Cano's line drive infield single to open the sixth. Nelson Cruz followed with a single to right. Kyle Seager bounced into a double play, sending Cano to third, but Verlander struck out Mitch Haniger with a 99 mph fastball to end the threat.

"To have Cam step up that next inning and hit a huge home run, and for the bullpen to come in and shut it down, this is how you win tight ballgames," Verlander said. "We'd been no-hit to that point, and we were still able to come out and win this game. These are the type of games that you can see in the playoffs."

Astros reliever Joe Musgrove pitched two scoreless innings, and Ken Giles struck out the side in the ninth for his 29th save in 32 opportunities.

Carlos Correa's one-out single in the eighth was the Astros' only hit other than Maybin's home run.

Miranda, who tweaked his ankle in the second, exited after six innings with a no-hitter intact. However, he walked six, leaving after 112 pitches with the game tied 1-1.

Miranda retired the first six hitters before losing command in the third, walking the bases loaded with one out.

Alex Bregman's sacrifice fly into the right field corner scored Carlos Beltran to make it 1-0. Miranda avoided further damage by retiring Jose Altuve on a groundout to third.

"I give him credit, he hung in there and didn't back off," Mariners manager Scott Servais said. "Lost his concentration in that inning and had the three walks and was able to get out of it. After that, he came in and got it taped up and he went right back out there and gave us everything he had."

It was the second consecutive loss for the Mariners (69-70), who are three games out of the second AL wild-card spot, now held by the Angels.

Seager accounted for the first run off Verlander, opening the fourth inning with his 21st home run as he sent a 3-2 pitch over the wall in right to make it 1-1. It was the third career home run off Verlander for Seager, who is batting .364 with three doubles and nine RBI against the right-hander.

In the end, though, the newcomers made the difference for the Astros.

"It's good for them, it's good for our team," Houston manager A.J. Hinch said. "We continue to add to the script that anybody on this team can really do something special for us. Obviously, Verlander set the tone by getting through his outing, Maybin comes with a big hit -- we didn't have a lot of opportunities, we drew some walks -- Maybin with the one big swing and we walk away with the win."
