TORONTO -- If not for run support, Wade Miley would have not have had much going for him Thursday night.

The Boston Red Sox left-hander was staked to an 8-0 lead before he took the mound, as David Ortiz hit a three-run homer and Hanley Ramirez added a solo blast in the top of the first.

Miley gave half the lead back in the second inning but made it through five innings to get the win as the Red Sox defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 12-6.

"Wade turned in what I would consider a blue-collar night," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "He didn't have much command, anywhere consistent to where he's been, but found a way to make some big pitches."

Miley (8-7) allowed seven hits, seven walks and four runs while striking out two.

"It was a grind, no doubt," Miley said. "I had really no fastball command. ... The offense did what they did; it helps out a lot."

Right fielder Alejandro De Aza went 3-for-5 with four RBIs for the Red Sox, who took three of four in Toronto to finish their road trip at 5-2.

Second baseman Brock Holt and shortstop Xander Bogaerts each had four hits for Boston.

Toronto hit back-to-back homers in the ninth against left-hander Craig Breslow. Catcher Russell Martin led off with his 12th of the season, and left fielder Danny Valencia followed with his fifth.

Center fielder Kevin Pillar had four hits for the Blue Jays, who completed their homestand at 3-4.

Blue Jays left-hander Matt Boyd, making his second major league start, allowed six hits, one walk and seven runs without getting an out in the first inning.

Boyd (0-2) was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo after the game, and right-handed reliever Todd Redmond was designated for assignment. Redmond pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

"I just didn't make my pitches," Boyd said, "and guys hit them. That's how it worked out. I've never had an outing where I didn't record an out. Just learn from it. It won't happen again. Stuff felt good, I just didn't execute."

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said, "We made a little bit of a run, we had some guys on base all night long, but we were missing that one big, big hit."

Gibbons was ejected in the bottom of fifth after the Blue Jays lost their challenge on an out call at the plate.

After the high-scoring first two innings, the next three runs came in the top of the seventh. Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval led off with a single against right-hander Steve Delabar, took third on two wild pitches and scored on a double by De Aza.

Catcher Ryan Hanigan walked and center fielder Mookie Betts singled to put Boston ahead 10-4.

The Red Sox (37-44) went up by seven on an infield single by Bogaerts against left-hander Brett Cecil.

Right-hander Roberto Osuna allowed an RBI single to De Aza in the eighth after first baseman Mike Napoli doubled.

The Red Sox struck for eight runs and nine hits in the first inning.

Betts had two singles and an RBI in the inning -- one hit against Boyd and the other against right-hander Liam Hendriks. Holt also had two singles in the first.

Bogaerts drove in the first run with the third single of the inning.

Ortiz, the designated hitter, hit his 14th homer of the season to make the score 4-0, and Ramirez, the left fielder, followed with his 16th homer.

After a single by Sandoval and a walk by Napoli, Hendriks came in and allowed a triple De Aza, who scored on Betts' second single.

The Blue Jays (42-39) scored four runs in the second on four hits and three walks. Second baseman Devon Travis had an RBI single, right fielder Jose Bautista delivered a two-run single, and designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion walked with the bases loaded.

The Blue Jays had two video reviews go against them in the bottom of the fifth.

The first reversed a safe call at first base and took an infield single away from Martin.

Valencia followed with a walk and Pillar singled. Valencia was called out at home on a single by Travis, and a three-minute review confirmed the call.

"It was a close play, so we appealed that," Gibbons said. "There was also a question whether the catcher threw his foot out there, and that's what catchers do, whether it falls in line with the rules nowadays, it's a great instinctive play. Really did what catchers should. ... You live with it, it was so close."

Miley said, "I saw his hand go over the (plate). Still pretty sure he didn't touch it, that's why I told (Hanigan) to make sure he touches him because he never touched the plate. That's huge right there "
