Padres 7, Phillies 3: Will Venable and Alexi Amarista homered and Robbie Erlin allowed one run in six innings as San Diego clinched a four-game series win over visiting Philadelphia.
Seth Smith had two hits and an RBI while Cory Spangenberg drove in a run for the Padres, who took three of four in the series to improve to 43-32 at home. Erlin (4-4) made his first start since May 17 and scattered five hits while striking out four and not walking a batter.
Kyle Kendrick (9-13) was reached for three runs on six hits and five walks in five innings for the Phillies. Domonic Brown and Cesar Hernandez each singled in a run while Ben Revere added an RBI single in the ninth among three hits for Philadelphia, which has dropped four of five.
Amarista took a 2-2 changeup into the front row in right in the second to open the scoring and lifted a sacrifice fly to left in the fourth to plate Yasmani Grandal with the go-ahead run. Smith sent a grounder through the shift into right-center for an RBI single in the fifth to push it to 3-1.
Cameron Maybin doubled to lead off the sixth off Antonio Bastardo and moved up on a groundout before Spangenberg sliced a bloop single into left to make it a three-run cushion. Venable doubled the advantage on one swing in the eighth, when he sent a 2-0 fastball from Cesar Jimenez out to center.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Erlin, who missed nearly four months due to elbow trouble, was starting in place of Tyson Ross (soreness). … Smith went 2-for-4 in his return to the lineup after being limited to pinch hitting due to hamstring soreness the last two nights. … The Phillies continue their 10-game road trip at Oakland on Friday while the Padres welcome the San Francisco Giants to town.
