Twins 7, Yankees 2: Josh Willingham hit a tying home run and Brian Dozier delivered a go-ahead RBI double in a six-run ninth as Minnesota stunned host New York in the rubber match of a three-game set.
Phil Hughes (6-1), who was making his first start against the Yankees since leaving the team that had drafted him, surrendered two runs on three hits and two walks in a season-high eight innings but left the game trailing in the eighth. Willingham got Hughes off the hook with a solo blast off David Robertson (0-2), who walked a pair before Dozier’s two-out double to left put the Twins on top.
Eduardo Nunez and Oswaldo Arcia each added a two-run double to extend the rally in the ninth as Minnesota batted around in the frame. Derek Jeter drove in a run and scored for the Yankees, who could not lock up starter Chase Whitley’s first career win after the rookie right-hander gave up one run and struck out six over five innings.
Dellin Betances struck out five of the six batters he faced in relief of Whitley and Adam Warren worked a scoreless frame before New York handed it over to Robertson in the ninth. Willingham led off for the Twins and drove the first pitch into the stands in left to knot it at 2-2.
Aaron Hicks led off the third with a single for Minnesota and moved up on a groundout before coming in on Trevor Plouffe’s two-out single to left. Brett Gardner led off the fourth with a triple for the Yankees and scored on a single to right by Jeter, who moved up on a single and a walk before coming in on Ichiro Suzuki’s sacrifice fly to center that gave New York a 2-1 lead.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira (right wrist soreness) is not expected to return to the lineup until at least Tuesday. … New York RHP Michael Pineda (shoulder soreness) has been shut down for at least another 10 days after a setback during his rehab. … Twins LF Jason Kubel went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts and is 0-for-21 in his last seven games.
