Angels 5, Mariners 0: C.J. Cron hit a three-run homer during a five-run seventh inning as host Los Angeles clinched its sixth American League West title since 2004.
C.J. Wilson (13-9) allowed one hit over seven innings and struck out seven to win his third straight start. Kole Calhoun added a run-scoring double for the Angels, who posted their 12th victory in 14 games.
Mariners starter James Paxton (6-3) was charged with three runs and four hits while striking out eight in 6 2/3 innings. The loss dropped Seattle two games behind Kansas City in the race for the second AL wild card.
Paxton took a two-hit shutout into the seventh before Howie Kendrick notched a one-out single to right field. David Freese followed with a base hit to right-center, and Mariners right fielder Chris Denorfia misplayed the ball as Kendrick came around to score.
Paxton fanned Chris Iannetta for the second out before being replace by Danny Farquhar, who served up Cron’s blast over the wall in left-center field. Calhoun doubled later in the inning to make it a five-run advantage, and Joe Smith and Huston Street each pitched a scoreless frame to complete the one-hitter.
GAME NOTEBOOK: 1B Justin Smoak had a two-out single in the fifth for the lone hit as Seattle was blanked for the 18th time this season. … Angels CF Mike Trout struck out in all four of his at-bats. … Mariners LHP Roenis Elias (elbow) is probably done for the season, according to manager Lloyd McClendon, after suffering the injury in Tuesday’s game.
