Dodgers 8, Giants 1: Yasiel Puig went 4-for-5 with three triples and a double, two RBIs and two runs scored as visiting Los Angeles routed San Francisco in the opener of a three-game series.
Matt Kemp went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Adrian Gonzalez added two hits and two RBIs for the Dodgers, who pulled within a half-game of first-place San Francisco in the National League West. Zack Greinke (12-6) struck out 10 -- four coming in the third inning -- and walked one in seven scoreless innings to snap a two-game losing skid.
Dee Gordon, who had three hits and scored twice, sparked the Dodgers’ five-run fifth inning with an RBI triple off Tim Lincecum (9-7). Los Angeles tied a franchise record with five triples, including three in the fifth, and Puig became the first player since Denard Span in 2010 to record three triples in a game while Greinke became the fifth pitcher in Los Angeles Dodgers history to record a four-strikeout inning.
Puig followed Gordon’s three-bagger with an RBI triple off Lincecum, who allowed six runs on nine hits over 4 1/3 innings. Gonzalez added an RBI single and Hanley Ramirez singled before Lincecum was replaced by Juan Gutierrez, who yielded Kemp’s two-out, two-run triple off the right-center field wall.
Ramirez returned after missing three games with a sore wrist and contributed two hits for Los Angeles, which finished with 15 hits and improved to 4-7 against the Giants this season. Pablo Sandoval had two hits and Tyler Colvin singled in a run in the ninth as San Francisco lost for the third time in their last nine games.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Giants C Hector Sanchez left the game in the fourth inning after taking a foul tip off his mask. … Puig finished with 11 total bases and became the first Dodgers player with three triples in a game since Jimmy Sheckard in 1901. … San Francisco purchased the contracts of 2B Dan Uggla and 2B Tony Abreu from Triple-A Fresno and placed 2B Marco Scutaro (back) and INF Ehire Adrianza (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list.
