Dodgers 1, Padres 0: Adrian Gonzalez belted a leadoff double in the ninth and scored on A.J Ellis’ sacrifice fly as Los Angeles blanked visiting San Diego.

The Dodgers had been held to three hits before Gonzalez doubled to begin the ninth off Kevin Quackenbush (1-2), who struck out Matt Kemp before walking Andre Ethier and Juan Uribe to load the bases. Ellis delivered a fly ball to deep right field and Gonzalez scored easily to help Los Angeles secure its 11th shutout.

Paul Maholm made a spot start in place of Josh Beckett (hip) and allowed two hits with no walks over six scoreless innings. Maholm, who had not thrown more than 2 1/3 frames since May 14, was perfect through three innings and did not allow a hit until Chase Headley’s one-out single in the fourth.

Kenley Jansen (1-3) worked a scoreless ninth inning for the Dodgers, who moved one game ahead of second-place San Francisco in the National League West. All nine games between San Diego and Los Angeles this season have been decided by three or fewer runs - with the Dodgers winning six of nine.

Padres starter Ian Kennedy received a no-decision after yielding three hits while striking out eight and throwing 117 pitches over eight shutout frames. Kennedy, who allowed just one runner to reach third base, has given up a total of two runs over his last three starts covering 21 innings.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Dodgers RF Yasiel Puig was ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the third inning. … The Padres optioned RHP Jesse Hahn to Triple-A El Paso and recalled INF Jace Peterson. Hahn is expected to rejoin San Diego’s rotation following the All-Star break. … Los Angeles SS Hanley Ramirez sat out his second straight game with a sore right shoulder and will likely miss Sunday’s series finale.
