Angels 5, Astros 2: Mike Trout homered twice and Jered Weaver struck out a season-high 12 to secure his American League-best 17th victory as host Los Angeles recorded its first 10-game winning streak in 12 years.
Trout finished with three hits and scored three times for the Angels, who have won 16 of their last 18 and saw their magic number dip to four to clinch their second AL West title in five years. Howie Kendrick had a single in his first at-bat to extend his hitting streak to 10 games and added an RBI single during a three-run seventh inning.
Jose Altuve ripped an RBI double in the eighth inning for the Astros, who had won eight of 10 prior to losing the first two contests of this three-game series. Robbie Grossman also drove in a run and Chris Carter had a two-out single in the sixth to increase his hitting streak to 11 games.
Trout opened the scoring in the first inning after depositing a 3-2 cutter from Scott Feldman (8-11) over the wall in right-center field. Grossman forged a tie in the third, but Trout regained the lead in the bottom of the frame by jumping on a 1-1 curveball for his career-high 34th blast - and third career multi-homer performance.
Albert Pujols drew Los Angeles' majors-leading 17th bases-loaded walk before Kendrick's single and Erick Aybar's RBI groundout pushed the advantage to 5-1 in the seventh inning. Weaver (17-8) recorded his 10th win in 12 decisions after allowing one run on four hits in seven innings and Huston Street retired the side in the ninth for his 38th save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Angels, who last won 10 in a row from Aug. 29-Sept. 8, 2002, failed to score at least seven runs for the first time in nine contests. ... Los Angeles RF Kole Calhoun went 0-for-4 to see his eight-game hitting streak come to an end. ... Feldman permitted two runs on eight hits in six innings to fall to 0-4 in his last five road starts versus the Angels.
