Twins 2, Tigers 1: Phil Hughes tossed seven scoreless innings to outduel Justin Verlander as visiting Minnesota halted a three-game losing streak.

Kurt Suzuki had two hits and broke a scoreless deadlock with a two-run single in the seventh as the Twins handed Detroit its second straight defeat following an eight-game winning streak. Hughes (4-1) won his fourth straight start, allowing eight hits, Casey Fien worked a perfect eighth and Glen Perkins gave up an RBI double to Alex Avila in the ninth before securing his ninth save.

Verlander (4-2) gave up two runs on seven hits to snap his nine-game winning streak against Minnesota and absorb his first defeat in his last six starts overall. Austin Jackson had three hits and Nick Castellanos added a pair for the Tigers, who dropped back-to-back games for the first time since April 13-16.

Brian Dozier and Chris Parmelee, who had two hits apiece for the Twins, each played a role in the decisive seventh inning. Dozier followed singles by Parmelee and Danny Santana with a walk to load the bases before Suzuki delivered a two-run single to center.

The Tigers threatened in the ninth when Jackson led off with a double against Perkins and scored on Avila's one-out double. Perkins shut the door from there by retiring J.D. Martinez on a pop out and striking out Rajai Davis to end it.
