Rays 2, Indians 0: Wil Myers recorded two hits and an RBI while Alex Colome pitched 6 1/3 strong innings as visiting Tampa Bay edged Cleveland to even the series at a game apiece.
James Loney also knocked in a run for the Rays, who snapped a three-game losing streak and notched their 22nd shutout to tie St. Louis for the major-league lead. Colome (2-0) allowed four hits and one walk while striking out six to earn his third career victory and Jake McGee struck out the side in the ninth for his 19th save.
Michael Brantley went 1-for-4 to become the first Indian to register 200 hits in a single season since Kenny Lofton had 210 in 1996. Cleveland starter Carlos Carrasco (8-7) yielded two runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks while striking out 10 over 7 2/3 innings to suffer the hard-luck defeat.
David DeJesus reached on an infield hit to lead off the fourth inning, moved to third on a throwing error and scored on Myers’ opposite-field single to right. Jason Giambi walked with two outs in the fifth and Lonnie Chisenhall followed with a single, but Colome fanned Mike Aviles looking to end the threat.
Ben Zobrist singled, stole second, moved to third on a grounder and scored on Loney’s infield hit up the middle for a 2-0 lead in the eighth. Joel Peralta gave up a hit before retiring the final two batters in the seventh and Grant Balfour set the Indians down in order in the eighth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Indians are the first team in the majors to have a player with 200 hits (Brantley) and a pitcher with at least 250 strikeouts (Corey Kluber, 269) since the 1999 Arizona Diamondbacks -- Luis Gonzalez (206 hits) and Randy Johnson (364 strikeouts). … Zobrist stole his 10th base to join Andrew McCutchen of Pittsburgh and Hanley Ramirez of the Los Angeles Dodgers as the only players to record double-digit homers and stolen bases in each of the last six seasons. … Tampa Bay 3B Evan Longoria went 0-for-4 while playing in his career-high 161st game.
