Cubs 3, Phillies 0: Travis Wood carried a no-hit bid into the sixth inning and Anthony Rizzo belted his team-leading 14th homer as Chicago claimed the rubber match to win its first series in Philadelphia in 13 years.
Starlin Castro collected an RBI single among his three hits and scored on Nate Schierholtz’s double for the Cubs, who emerged victorious in the City of Brotherly Love for the first time since April 6-8, 2001. Justin Ruggiano scored a run and had a single to extend his hitting streak to four games.
Wood (7-5) made short work of the Phillies before Ben Revere ripped a one-out single in the sixth and Jimmy Rollins did the same to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. The 27-year-old left-hander allowed one more hit and struck out six in eight innings before Neil Ramirez retired the side in the ninth for his third save.
After Chicago belted three solo homers in Saturday's 7-4 setback, Rizzo followed suit by sending a first-pitch sinker from A.J. Burnett (4-6) over the wall in right field in the first. Castro also jumped on a first pitch in the third by plating Ruggiano with an RBI single before coming around to score on Schierholtz's shot to left field in the sixth.
Burnett suffered the loss after permitting three runs on eight hits in as many innings for Philadelphia, which finished its six-game homestand with a 4-2 mark. The Phillies will open a seven-game road trip on Monday when it begins a three-game set in Atlanta.
