Reds 5, Diamondbacks 0: Johnny Cueto tossed 7 1/3 superb innings and Brandon Phillips collected two hits and two RBIs as visiting Cincinnati posted its second straight win.
Billy Hamilton and Skip Schumaker each recorded two hits and scored twice for the Reds, who have recorded 11 runs over their last two contests after totaling 12 in their previous six games. Cueto (5-4) halted his personal two-game skid by limiting Arizona to five hits and a walk while striking out seven.
Gerardo Parra collected half of the six hits registered by the Diamondbacks, who averaged six runs over their previous five contests. Brandon McCarthy (1-7) saw his winless streak reach five games after surrendering five runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Cueto bounced back from back-to-back losses in which he yielded a total of 12 runs (seven earned) to improve to 6-1 in seven career starts against Arizona. The Dominican right-hander settled down after allowing two of the first three Diamondbacks to reach in the opening inning and exited in the eighth after walking and hitting a batter.
Phillips plated Hamilton with the third of three straight singles to start the fourth and Todd Frazier delivered an RBI base hit two batters later before Brayan Pena capped the three-run rally with a double that drove in Phillips. Hamilton and Phillips helped increase the lead an inning later, as the former hit a leadoff single and stole second before scoring on a single by Schumaker, who raced home on a double by the latter.
