Diamondbacks 5, Rockies 3: Wade Miley tossed eight strong innings and also delivered an RBI single as part of a 3-for-4 day at the plate as Arizona avoided a three-game sweep in Colorado.
Already making his third start of the season due to the Diamondbacks' major league-opening series in Australia, Miley (2-1) allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks, recording just a pair of strikeouts along the way. Mark Trumbo provided support with his major league-best fifth homer of the young season, the fourth straight game in which the Arizona outfielder has gone deep.
Offseason acquisition Brett Anderson (0-2) did not fare particularly well in his Coors Field debut for the Rockies, allowing 10 hits and three walks in six innings, although two of the five runs he surrendered were unearned. Wilin Rosario was an offensive bright spot for Colorado, going 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
Arizona scored the game's first five runs, starting with a pair in the third inning on an error by third baseman Nolan Arenado. Miley's RBI single in the fourth pushed the lead to 3-0 and Trumbo's two-run shot in the fifth extended the lead even further. Colorado's first two runs came on sacrifice flies by Drew Stubbs and Arenado in the fifth and seventh, respectively.
After Miley exited, the Rockies made some noise against Addison Reed in the ninth, but the Diamondbacks' closer induced a key double play from Rosario to limit the damage to one run before Arenado flied out to end it. Aaron Hill, Martin Prado and Paul Goldschmidt each chipped in a pair of hits for Arizona, which tied a franchise record by turning five double plays, including four in the first five innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Miley had a homer and eight RBIs last season but hit just .133 in 2013. ... Rockies RF Charlie Blackmon slid into first base and was called out to lead off the bottom of the first, but Colorado manager Walt Weiss challenged and the play was reserved. ... Miley improved to 7-0 all-time against the Rockies.
