Nationals 11, Phillies 2: Wilson Ramos went 4-for-4 with five RBIs while Jordan Zimmermann tossed seven strong innings and hit an RBI single as Washington took two of three at home from Philadelphia.
Ramos drove in runs with singles in the second, fourth and seventh innings and tied a career high with his 15th home run in the sixth. Zimmermann (18-8) allowed two runs and struck out seven to collect his National League-leading 18th victory for Washington, which closed to within 4 1/2 games of Cincinnati for the second wild-card spot in the NL.
Bryce Harper had three hits and scored three times while Ian Desmond had a pair of hits and three RBIs to send the Nationals to their eighth win in nine games. Tyler Cloyd (2-5) posted his second consecutive poor four-inning start, giving up five runs and 10 hits after surrendering seven runs in a loss to San Diego on Tuesday.
Kevin Frandsen’s second-inning sacrifice fly and Chase Utley’s third-inning RBI groundout sandwiched Ramos’ first run-scoring hit. Harper and Desmond opened the fourth with doubles on consecutive pitches and Ramos’ second single gave Washington a 3-2 advantage.
Two batters later, Zimmermann ripped an 0-2 fastball past Frandsen at first to plate Ramos and the Nationals added a run in the fifth on Jayson Werth's RBI single and again in the sixth on Ramos’ solo shot. Desmond and Ramos each tacked on two-run singles in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Washington CF Denard Span, who finished 2-for-5, singled in the third to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 26 games. … The Phillies fell for only the third time in nine games and are 16-13 overall since Ryne Sandberg took over as interim manager. … Ramos, who matched single-game personal highs in hits and RBIs, recorded his third five-RBI game since July 4 and set a team record (since 2005) for most home runs by catcher in a season.
