Cardinals 4, Phillies 1: Rookie Shelby Miller pitched six scoreless innings and Allen Craig drove in a pair of runs as host St. Louis won the opener of a three-game series.
Miller (10-6) struck out six and allowed three hits and a walk to outduel fellow rookie Jonathan Pettibone, who was charged with three runs on seven hits over five frames. Pettibone struck out four and walked three while suffering his first loss since June 15 at Colorado.
Craig opened the scoring with an RBI fielder's choice in the first and tacked on a run-scoring single in the seventh. The Cardinals made it 3-0 in the fourth as Yadier Molina knocked in a run with a double down the left-field line and scored on David Freese's single through the right side.
The Phillies broke through on John Mayberry's RBI double off Seth Maness in the seventh, but Trevor Rosenthal worked a perfect eighth and Edward Mujica stranded a pair of runners in the ninth for his 29th save.
The Cardinals won for the eighth time in their last nine home games. Chase Utley went 3-for-4 for the Phillies, who have lost three straight.
