Cardinals 13, Marlins 7: Carlos Beltran homered twice and Yadier Molina had three RBIs as visiting St. Louis won a slugfest against Miami.
David Freese homered and had two RBIs and Lance Lynn also drove in two runs as the Cardinals racked up 17 hits and improved to 5-3 on a nine-game road excursion. Beltran, Freese and Daniel Descalso had three hits apiece.
Lynn (9-1) recorded his fourth straight victory despite lasting five innings and giving up season highs of seven runs and nine hits. Rob Brantly had three RBIs and Giancarlo Stanton homered for the Marlins, who had 11 hits.
Molina had a two-run single and St. Louis scored five runs in the first inning off Tom Koehler (0-5) before Miami tallied four in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by Brantly’s two-run single. Beltran homered in the second from the left side of the plate to make it 6-4 before Stanton hit a tying two-run shot in the bottom half.
Freese’s third-inning homer put the Cardinals in the lead for good and Lynn stroked a two-run single in the fifth. Brantly’s fifth-inning sacrifice fly pulled the Marlins within two before Allen Craig and Molina had run-scoring singles during a three-run eighth and Beltran hit a homer from the right side in the ninth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Koehler allowed a career-worst nine runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings and is winless in seven starts this season. … Beltran’s second homer was the 350th of his career. He has six homers and 15 RBIs during a 14-game hitting streak. … Miami placed C Miguel Olivo on the restricted list Saturday, one day after Olivo left the ballpark without permission after batting practice.
