Padres 4, Braves 0: Will Venable went 3-for-5 and Chase Headley homered for the third straight game as visiting San Diego won two of three from Atlanta.
Headley launched a two-run homer in the sixth and Tommy Medica added a solo blast in the seventh as the Padres won for the eighth time in their past 12 contests. Rookie Burch Smith (1-1) no-hit the Braves for five innings, earning his first major-league win by allowing three hits with 10 strikeouts in seven frames.
Julio Teheran (12-8) surrendered four runs on seven hits with six strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings for the Braves, who saw their National League East lead over Washington drop to 10 games. Atlanta, which has a magic number of four to win its first division crown since 2005, opens a three-game set Monday at the Nationals.
Teheran had retired 14 hitters in a row before Venable singled, stole second and scored on Jedd Gyorko’s single to left in the sixth to snap a scoreless tie. Headley followed by nailing a 3-2 pitch into the right-field seats to make it 3-0, and Medica’s second major-league homer in the seventh sailed deep into the left-field seats.
Teheran broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single in the sixth. Justin Upton, Chris Johnson and Freddie Freeman had the other Atlanta hits as the Braves lost for the seventh time in their past 11 games.
GAME NOTEBOOK: San Diego C Nick Hundley added two hits for the Padres. … San Diego won five of six against Atlanta in 2013. ... Atlanta CF B.J. Upton finished 0-for-3 with two strikeouts, and has one hit in his past 24 at-bats.
