Red Sox 8, Yankees 7 (11): Mike Napoli's second homer of the game, a two-out shot into the bleachers in center field, lifted host Boston to the walk-off win in the rubber match of the three-game series.
Napoli also had a three-run blast, Jonny Gomes added a solo homer and Shane Victorino had two hits and two RBIs for the Red Sox, who maintained a 1 1/2-game lead over Tampa Bay atop the American League East and moved seven games ahead of New York. Pedro Beato (1-0) pitched a scoreless 11th for the victory.
The long homer by Napoli marked a major league-best ninth walk-off victory for Boston and made a loser of Adam Warren (1-1). It also spoiled an otherwise brilliant performance by the Yankees' bullpen, which registered 10 strikeouts and allowed one hit in 5 2/3 innings prior to Napoli's the game-winning blast
Robinson Cano went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI singles to extend his hitting streak to 12 games and Brett Gardner and Eduardo Nunez each had three hits for New York, which squandered an early 3-0 lead before battling back to erase a 7-3 deficit with two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings.
Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia was rocked for seven runs on nine hits over five-plus innings on his 33rd birthday while Boston counterpart Ryan Dempster lasted 5 1/3 innings and gave up five runs - three earned - on six hits and four walks to remain winless in seven career starts versus New York. Gardner reached base five times, the first Yankee to do so at Fenway Park since Mickey Mantle in 1954.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez, who was scheduled to return from a rehab stint and make his season debut Monday, underwent an MRI exam Sunday that revealed a Grade 1 strain of his left quadriceps. He will head to Tampa, Fla., for treatment and could be ready in seven to 10 days. ... Red Sox RHP Clay Buchholz, off to a 9-0 start, will visit renowned orthopedist Dr. James Andrews on Monday to get a second opinion on the neck ailment that has sidelined him since June 8. The Red Sox also learned the RHP Andrew Bailey will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery Wednesday and will be out at least 12 months. ... Boston will host surging Tampa Bay in the opener of a four-game series Monday night while the Yankees head to Texas for a four-game set with the Rangers.
