Red Sox 4, Yankees 2: Jacoby Ellsbury and Jonny Gomes homered in support of Felix Doubront as Boston took the series opener from visiting New York.
Jose Iglesias added an RBI single and David Ortiz doubled twice to back Doubront (7-3), who took a no-hitter into the fifth before finishing his two-run, three-hit performance over 6 1/3 innings. Koji Uehara picked up his ninth save with a 1-2-3 ninth as the Red Sox maintained their lead in the American League East.
Andy Pettitte (7-7) was reached for all four runs on six hits in 6 1/3 frames for the Yankees. Chris Stewart doubled in a run and Brett Gardner scored on an error in the fourth before being ejected in the following inning.
Ellsbury took Pettitte’s second pitch of the game and blasted it over the bullpen in right field for his fourth home run. Gomes made it a 3-0 advantage in the second when he came up with one on and sent a 2-2 changeup into the “Green Monster” seats in left.
New York scored without the benefit of a hit in the fourth as Gardner led off with a walk, stole second and third and came around to score when catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s throw went into left field.
